St. George's is part of the Anglican Church of Canada. We are in the Diocese of Algoma under the leadership of The Archbishop Anne Germond, which was created in 1872. We are situated in the Deanery of Sudbury/Manitoulin under the leadership of The Archdeacon Glen Miller.
As Anglicans, we are committed to the Five Marks of Mission that guide our ministry:
For over 100 years, St. George's has been a beacon of faith in Espanola. We offer a safe place with a mainstream Christian perspective where individuals can explore their faith and discover their spiritual path.
Our beautiful Anglo-Gothic church building has been a landmark in Espanola since 1924, complete with our historic bell tower.
We believe in building authentic relationships and serving our neighbors through various ministries and community partnerships.
Whether you're returning to faith, exploring Christianity, or looking for a church home, you'll find a warm welcome here.
Key moments that have shaped St. George's into the vibrant community it is today.
The mill town of Espanola was established and Anglican families began meeting informally for worship, laying the foundation for what would become St. George's.
On October 2nd, St. George's Anglican Church officially opened its doors at 213 Tudhope Street in a beautiful Anglo-Gothic style building with its historic bell tower.
The church established strong foundations with the Anglican Church Women (ACW) league, vibrant children's programs, Sunday School, and confirmation classes filled with young people.
A dedicated organist and robust choir were established. Many of Espanola's town officials regularly attended St. George's, establishing it as a cornerstone of the community.
The legendary yard sale started, becoming so successful that donations spread across the entire church property, requiring a large garbage bin for excess items.
St. George's began hosting ecumenical events, including the annual Christmas Cantata and World Day of Prayer participation, strengthening relationships with other denominations.
Beverly van der Jagt was licensed as a lay pastor by Archbishop Anne Germond, beginning a new chapter of leadership and renewed energy for the congregation.
The historic bell was rung 150 times for Canada's 150th anniversary and tolled for the Armistice centennial. The church adopted "Sharing the Lord's Table" as their theme.
Beverly van der Jagt was ordained as a Priest on June 1st by Archbishop Anne Germond, formalizing her ministry leadership and strengthening pastoral care.
St. George's celebrates 100 years of faithful ministry as "the little white church on Tudhope Street" and beacon of faith in Espanola, looking forward to the next century of service.
